1 · 無極 (Wu Ji) — The Primordial Source

Peaceful Chinese watercolor landscape with a spacious empty golden circle above misty mountains, a still lake, blossoms, and bamboo.

無極 (Wu Ji) is often translated as the limitless or the state without polarity. In classical Chinese cosmology, it points toward what lies beyond the distinctions through which we ordinarily experience the world. Before we speak of 陰陽 (Yin Yang), perhaps we should contemplate what it means for there to be no division at all.

What happens when we become so attached to our knowledge, beliefs, or even our spiritual identities that we can no longer see beyond them? And might the limitless invite us to consider the divine beyond the forms and names we give it?

A thought for contemplation: If we set aside everything we believe defines us, what remains?

More exploration of 無極 (Wu Ji) is coming.
